senate armed services committee. >> president obama nominated the former nebraska senator as the next u.s. defense secretary. his confirmation process is expected to be somewhat contentious, more so than senator john kerry for secretary of state. delia goncalves is live in our satellite center. she has more on hagel's battle as he goes before the senate. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it will be a fiery hearing on the hilda. senator kerry breezed through his confirmation process. it won't be as easy for senator chuck hagel, mainly because of his past comments that are literally coming back to haunt him. the 66-year-old vietnam veteran says his views have been distorted but his critics, and there are lots of them, say it shows a deep misunderstanding of the issues, including israeli-u.s. relations. some comments have been seen as pro-palestine, even as a justification for terrorism. the senator has even been seen as anti-gay. but his colleagues, including
6:04 am
republican senator john coryn from texas are not buying his apology. >> i realize senator hagel is now repudiating many of his past actions and statements, but we've seen this before, unfortunately. individuals approaching the confirmation process undergoing a seaming transformation. but this sudden and convenient transformation beggars belief. he has not undergone an ideological makeover. he just wants to win approval from members of this chamber in what we might call a confirmation conversion. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00, i'll let you know -- 6:30 rather, i'll leapt you know how hagel is fighting back and -- i'll let you know how hagel is fighting back and who is on his side. >> thank you, delia, live in our satellite center. yesterday on capitol hill,

6:06 am
he denied ever using it in his effort to return. sunday's super dome showdown will be the final game of his career and of course you can see it right here on wusa9. >> of course, wusa9 is in new orleans. we're counting down to the big game all week long bringing you all the stories, all the blitz, all the glitz. then you can settle down with your super bowl feast this sunday. game time 6:30 right here on wusa9. >> depending on where you are, you probably heard some wind and some rain outside your house last night, but not much of a problem compared to other places. a powerful storm swept through the southeast. and there it spawned tornadoes and dangerous winds. at least two people have died, dozens more are homeless and businesses have been destroyed. one of the deaths was in georgia where a tornado hit a smalltown there. another person died in tennessee. a twister hit near nashville, tennessee. a former chief psychiatrist at the f.b.i. who's been trying to convince d.c. government to allow him to write prescriptions for

6:13 am
>> oh, wow. what's the coating on it? >> this is called -- we put a rub. what's created in the smoking process is it creates a bark on the outside. and that's where you have the most intense -- you have the most fat up here and fat and smoke means flavor. >> it creates taste. >> yes. so it's just like that. incredible carrization that takes -- carmelization that takes place in bacon, that's where you get a lot of that aroma from. it creates that reduction, delicious -- luscious, delicious quality. >> in addition to the beef, you do several other dishes. >> we do pulled pork, smoked loaded beans. we've done smoked goat. you name it. anything that's long, slow, tough meat, it ends up being delicious want it is gets out of the smoker. >> you running any specials for

6:15 am
itself, the particular meat is going to dictate what it ends up being. >> we're just about ready to toss it to howard. i'm going to steal a piece while he's getting this ready. how much time, lauren? about 20 seconds. >> we'll get this together. this is our memphis sauce, our sweet. do you like spicy? >> yeah. this is our mustard. >> i'll give it a try. as i take a big bite, i'll be tossing it over you to. i'll save you some. >> we want to bring you some breaking news. fire crews are working to put out a fire at a home in the 7700 block of glenmore spring road in bethesda. at this point one person had to be rescued from the burning home. no word at this point how serious the injuries are at this time. we're going to continue to follow the story. we're told the fire right now is under control. we will have more information. we'll bring it you to when it
6:16 am
becomes available. now over to you, howard. thanks, jess. got a lot of wind this morning. that's not helping the firefighters. water last night a big problem. this is up in frederick county. this is ijamsville at muntger road. that's water covering the entire road. we're seeing lots of that this morning in places up in frederick and loudoun and all these areas that you see where flood warnings here going along the spine of the blue ridge there. we've got shenandoah county schools closed. culpeper on a two-hour delay due to high water. even luray. just heard from amy who says she has 2 feet of water in the front yard. the winds, maybe they should consider a closure or delay she's saying. just be careful out there this morning. in montgomery county we've got some streams, creeks, rivers as well that are on the high side but no more flash flooding because the rains have left. looking at our day planner, temperatures will be dropping into the low 40s and not really recovering much to about 45, 46 with a healthy, brink, almost really -- brisk, almost really

the rains are leaving. winds have increased. we're looking at colder temperatures as well. temperatures down to the lower 40s in parts of loudoun county. still 50 at national but barely. windchills are dropping into the 30s. so bundle up. it is going to be a windy and cold day. at least the sun is coming back. we're looking at temperatures topping out or getting back to, i should say, the middle 40s. jessica? duct tape has plenty of uses, but jeannie found some that you probably shouldn't try. take a look. >> reporter: they're nothing to sniff at. duct tape diapers used to smuggle cocaine. two women were caught coming into j.f.k. airport wearing them. two women flew in from the dominican republic. a canine alerted and responded to one suspect's midsection. another suspect walked with an awkward gait. each was carrying over three keel lows of cocaine -- kilos of cocaine in their duct taped

diapers. such a ridiculous smuggling technique. we haven't seen anyone hide drugs in diapers since three men and a baby conspired to successfully allude a narcotics detective. according to the complaint, one of the duct tape diapered suspects said she was offered $9,000 to $10,000 to smuggle the coke into the u.s. crack cocaine, tweeted one jokester. while we're on the subject of cocaine in diapers, guess what they found on nine out of ten baby changing stations at public rest rooms in the u.k.? for a documentary, journalists at real radio used wipes to swab public bathrooms. 92 out of the 100-plus baby units tested positive for cocaine. duct tape diapers got us thinking about how handy duct tape is for so many things.

6:30 am
now we're dealing with the remnants with some high waters from flooding in spots. that's going to cause some delays. monika will have more on that. this morning we're looking good. sunshine but windy today. very windy in fa those wiat times could st 40 to 50 miles an hour as temperatures will drp off to the low to mid--- drop off to the low to mid-40s and pretty much hang out there for much of the day. there goes the heavy rain. boston has seen it along with providence. we're seeing snow showers in central and western pennsylvania. closer to home you see everything is clearing out very quickly to the east. moon shining brightly this morning and the sprinkles that we had here on this side of the bay, they're gone. it's just a windy morning gusting to 41 in leesburg right now. 40 in gaithersburg and 29 at national as the temps have dropped off into the 40s with some windchills now down in the 20s and 30s. let's go to monika samtani with more on the road closures and other incidents we're dealing with. we're going to give you a fine example of what we've been talking about with the high standing water and flooding conditions. this is the third water rescue
6:31 am
this morning that montgomery county fire and rescue have been dealing with. this is in the 16000 block not far from convince orchard high school. you can see the cars stuck in the high water. do not attempt to cross high water. if you see the flooding conditions, turn around and deal with other roads. do not deal with this. you can see fire and rescue at the bottom of your screen trying to figure out how to get this guy out of here. in the meantime, let's go to a couple of graphics. i want to let you know there are wind restrictions on the bay bridge which means no box trucks, house trailers, empty semi trucks or rvs allowed there. if you're planning to head out, turn around, don't drown. there are doubled trees and wires all around the metropolitan area. one more thing. if you use public transportation, marc camden trains 5 to 10 minutes late. brunswick 87210 to 15.

6:34 am
today's confirmation hearing. among them potential sequestration cuts at the pentagon, his views in the middle east and his views of women and gays in the military. the last two specifically will be asked in light of controversial comments made in the past seen as anti-israel and anti-gay. hagel is fighting back and apologizing. >> we chose this as the hagel war room. we are doing rapid response as issues come in. that's what you would expect in this confirmation process. >> as a measure of our progress as a nation and specifically as a community of lgbt individuals, within 24 hours senator hagel had issued an apology. >> so he has some folks on his side. the 66-year-old vietnam veteran says his views have been distorted but it will be an uphill battle. we'll see how it goes today. >> sounds like he will have to defend every comma and permed the way things are going. >> we are -- period the way things are going. >> and we're going back 13
